EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a specified psychotherapy treatment that helps people heal from life events or experiences that are difficult, distressing or frightening.
How EMDR Treatment Works
EMDR Therapy suggests that our nervous system sometimes struggles to integrate incidences that occur in our lives, and/or it becomes so overwhelmed, it cannot integrate the information.
Instead of processing or ‘digesting’ the occurrence(s), images, feelings, thoughts and body sensations of the memory, it can get ‘stuck’ and then stored in the brain – causing distressing symptoms.
With EMDR Therapy, a person’s nervous system essentially “unlocks” or becomes “unstuck,” allowing the proper processing to occur. One might imagine “digestion” or processing properly occurring in the brain as a result – this can reduce disturbing symptoms while allowing the client to feel more peaceful. What’s really powerful is that the client’s own brain is facilitating the healing and the client is always in control during the process.
EMDR can truly give clients the skills to build tolerance for coping with uncomfortable situations and resolving stressors.
EMDR has provided millions of people across the world the opportunity to heal, and there is a thus a lot of research to support its use. The World Health Organization, American Psychiatric Association, and the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies designate EMDR as an effective treatment.
